Most people aren’t doing chores on Christmas Eve. They’re with family, having a warm cozy dinner telling stories over the crackling fire and possibly opening presents if you’re one of those families that doesn’t open them on Christmas day.

That’s not the usual scene at our house at Christmastime. Not that it probably wouldn’t be but our families live out of state so we tend to participate in different activities. And when you’re renting your back house out to guests on AirBnB, you never know what the holidays will bring.
I captured this photograph on Christmas Eve of our guests’ laundry hanging on the line in our backyard. I mean, who doesn’t want clean underwear for Christmas day?

The photograph titled, “Laundry Day” was featured in the group exhibition, “Home” at the Praxis Photo Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota in November and December of 2024.
It’s also currently in the “Home” 2025 online exhibition by Carlotta Gallery.
Our guests will probably live the rest of their lives without knowing a photo of their panties and laundry were hanging on a wall in an art gallery and were seen worldwide online. I wonder if they ever happen to come across this picture, will they even recognize their own unmentionables.
I was especially drawn to the work titled “Laundry Day”. This image feels intimate and cinematic at the same time, and there is a humanity to the scene, combined with a subtle sense of humor and observation, that makes it both engaging and memorable.

The balance between color, and environment is particularly strong in this piece. It is the kind of photograph that invites the viewer to imagine the broader story around the moment you have captured. Your submission clearly communicates your artistic priorities and demonstrates the thoughtfulness behind your practice.
